Given the frequent combination of frontonasal dysplasia with defects in the bones of the cranial vault and brain anomalies, M. Cohen in 1979 proposed calling these cases craniofrontonasal dysplasia. Hypertelorism and defects in the midline structures of the skull, ranging from a hidden cleft of the skull bones to cerebral hernia, are typical for the syndrome. There is a wedge-shaped growth of hair on the forehead ("cape of the widow").
